Nutella
Released January, 1964
The Pros:Absolutely delicious. Choclate on bread common! More versitile than PB.
The Cons:Too much sugar in it. Calorie and fat content. This product bills its self as a healthy alternative, but there is nothing healthy about it. If their slogan was "Better Than Frosting" that would be truthful.
Nutella is a hazelnut and chocolate based spread used to make food sweet (and delicious). It was initially created in the 1940s as an alternative to pure chocolate spread due to the cocoa rationing of World War II.

The spread was first introduced in 1951 by Pietro Ferrero, the father of the Ferrero SpA empire, as a hard block of the sweet mix. It wasn't until 1964 that Ferrero's son turned the mix into more of a liquid consistency and packaged it into a jar and called it Nutella. The name and jar have remained the same since then and the Ferrero company has grown to a 19,000 person company that distributes its chocolate products around the world.
While the actual recipe is a closely guarded secret by the Ferrero family the main ingredients and nutritional information are known.
Ingredients
- sugar
- vegetable oil
- hazelnuts (13%)
- skim milk powder (8.7%)
- fat-reduced cocoa powder (7.4%)
- soy lecithin emulsifier
- vanillin falvoring
Interestingly enough, despite the strong chocolate flavor of the spread, and its hazelnut derived name, the cocoa and hazelnut comprise only 20% of the overall mixture.

Ferroro also makes sure to advertise that Nutella contains no artificial coloring and no preservatives.
Be careful - this is an addictive substance! Once I have a jar, I have no choice but to crack it open and sit down with a spoon!!

#nutella In Europe, Nutella is not only a staple but an accepted obsession, and it will forever be my first and lasting love...
That being said, they've introduced a new jar design - round plastic cup (instead of the bulky oval glass) and flat plastic snap top. it's small enough for a picnic in the park and totally reusable.

#nutella After going without Nutella for a while I picked up one of the bigger jars and have been having an almost daily dose of it. I was suckered by the advertisements claiming it's not that bad for you well... even with some exercise I've still put on some pounds. Damn you Nutella! DAMN YOU!
